This just in: The provincial regulators have concluded that The Law Society Staffers have been assessed as being in an open and continuing breach of Law Society rules as to conduct unbecoming to the profession in maintaining files of a firm contrary to Court order. It is also mischief to property as the files are property of the firm. The document originals are the client's yet if the firm is owed money, there is a lien on the file. In any event, when the client has retained his document originals and the firm has maintained only copies of the same, the file is certainly firm property. In our case, we maintained copies of originals and the files must be returned.
