The Federal Government never introduced a policy that cuts grocery store prices in half at the register; or did they? They were supposed to do it but the means seems to have gone to the banks that worked to run a point and affinity card with the grocery stores. But this is not the subsidy they offered, using our money to pay supermarkets with our tax dollars to reduce the prices. The prices have not changed as of August 24th, 2026. However, the confusion likely stems from how the government framed their financial relief policy: the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit. The 50% figure was used extensively in campaigns and policy press releases, but it referred to a cash rebate top-up, not store shelf prices. It'a like he has accused the banks or fingered them all as Fraudsters with him in a breach of trust; the supermarkets also. I think he is the son of some stripper or strip club manager who robbed the club and gave some money to the grocery store so she would always have FOOD. They mugged her for robbing the club and she died on the Court ( Palais du Justice) steps in Longuil, Quebec. They made babies out of her and she might be still alive kind of...but not conscious some where with Buck who likes to... This is all for testimony maybe to understand the dead mother but we can't afford this. The auditor from Mexico has found a way every time to honour his motivations so here we have a 40% price drop and a 10% discount from the points affinity SCENE card. The dales tax was reduced to 13% and whatever national revenue there is, it was used to building more buildings that we see now. They are under occupied by Canadians but partially occupied by travellers and new immigrants mostly; the people who can afford to live there. But, honestly if you did build 500 buildings and open them in 8 months, how fast could the population increase to absorb these new spaces? How many Canadians could move in? The point is that the national 13% sales tax revenue as a pot of gold increases even as we give a small increase to Canadians and all Canadians this time. No Canadian cam be excluded based on s.15 of the Charter. If they are not paid, we arrest the persons responsible for mischief. A deliberate, flagrant breach of the Charter is mischief contrary to s.15 of the Charter that says benefits must be paid generally to all equally. We acknowledge the s.91 and s.92 powers but the power does not entitle flagrant divergence in services and benefits to be enjoyed by all. But in some cases, it is the power to answer regional needs as they arise and make additional benefits payments accordingly. But, no one is left behind. This is acceptable. CLICK HERE.

What the Policy Actually Did

The federal government revamped and expanded the existing GST/HST Credit into the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (CGEB) to provide targeted financial relief to over 12 million low- to modest-income Canadians.

  • The "50% Increase" (One-Time Top-Up): The government issued a one-time cash top-up equal to 50% of an individual's or family's annual entitlement under the tax benefit.
  • The 25% Permanent Boost: In addition to the lump sum, base quarterly payments were increased by 25% for five years.
  • How It Arrives: Payments were delivered automatically via direct deposit or cheque through the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)—not as a discount at checkout.

Total Maximum Benefits (2026 Breakdown)

Combining the 50% top-up and the 25% base increase, total relief provided for the year is structured as follows:

Recipient TypeBase Entitlement50% One-Time Top-Up25% Base IncreaseTotal Received (Full Year)
Single Individual$543$267$136Up to $950
Couple$710$349$178Up to $1,240
Single Parent (1 child)$805$395$201Up to $1,401
Family (Couple + 2 children)$1,086$533$272Up to $1,890

Summary of Government Retail Actions

While the cash relief is meant to help offset grocery costs, direct intervention in retail supply chains has been limited to non-pricing policies:

  • Launching a National Food Security Strategy
  • Tasking the Competition Bureau with investigating grocery chain pricing practices
  • Mandating unit price labeling to help shoppers compare unit costs accurately across brands.
