Manchester United Football Club
Manchester United Football Club is an English football club based in the Trafford district and located in the town of Stretford , in the western suburbs of Manchester . Founded in 1878 as Newton Heath , Manchester United plays at Old Trafford , its historic stadium, which earned its nickname "Theatre of Dreams" from the exploits achieved over the years by the Manchester club.
Manchester United has the second most impressive record in English football, having won the English league title twenty times, in addition to thirteen FA Cups , six League Cups , twenty-one Community Shields , three Champions Leagues , one Cup Winners' Cup , one Europa League , one UEFA Super Cup , one Intercontinental Cup and one 2008 FIFA Club World Cup .
History
Early years (1878-1945)
The club was founded in 1878 as "Newton Heath LYR FC" . It was initially a corporate team for the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway ( LYR). The club gained a local reputation by participating in local competitions and aspired to join the Football League , which was founded in 1888. However, the club was refused entry and subsequently decided to join a rival league, which was short-lived due to financial difficulties.
In 1889, Newton Heath LYR decided to join forces with several other clubs to create an inter-city league called the Football Alliance . The club finished eighth in the league at the end of this inaugural season and changed its name at the end of the season: the railway company ceased sponsoring the team, which then simply became known as Newton Heath . In 1892, the Football League was expanded and merged with the Football Alliance . This league was divided into two divisions, and Newton Heath was accepted into the top tier. However, the club finished last in this first season and only secured its place in the top flight thanks to a victory against Small Heathen in the relegation playoff. The club then moved to Bank Street in 1893 (it had only been accepted on its third application in 1892).

After a few difficult years, the club finally gained some financial stability thanks to a brewer, John Henry Davies , who invested in the club and recruited new players and a new management team. The decision to change the name was then made; Manchester Central and Manchester Celtic were proposed, but both were rejected in favor of a name that would become famous: Manchester United Football Club . In 1902, Newton Heath officially changed its name and, consequently, its colors. The club abandoned green and gold for red and white.

The 1902-1903 season was therefore the club's first under the name Manchester United Football Club. Massive investments by John Henry Davies , along with the arrival of new players, gave the club a boost, and they managed to finish fifth in the league with 38 points. During the summer of 1903, the Manchester club decided to hire journalist Ernest Mangnall . They instilled a distinct playing style, notably by requiring their players to train without a ball during the week so they could be on it all Saturday. In 1906, the club achieved a major coup by securing the signature of star player Billy Meredith . A striker for the other club in the city, Manchester City , Billy Meredith was considered one of the best players in the region and would greatly contribute to the club's success in the coming years. In 1908, the team – still managed by Ernest Mangnall – won its first English league title . Manchester United finished top of the table with 52 points, well ahead of runners-up Aston Villa and their city rivals Manchester City . A year later, the club won its first- ever FA Cup , defeating Bristol City 1-0. It was a golden age for the fans, who also got a new stadium: in 1910, chairman John Henry Davies bought land in the old Trafford area to build a stadium bearing the same name. The 80,000-seat stadium was designed by the renowned Scottish architect Archibald Leitch . Old Trafford was opened onduring a match against Liverpool FC , which the visitors won 4-3. In 1911, United won the championship again and then the Charity Shield a few weeks later by beating Swindon Town 8-4.
This final trophy marked the end of this first golden era: Ernest Mangnall left the club mid-season to join Manchester City , leaving the team to finish a disappointing 14th in the 1911-1912 season. This decline in the club's sporting performance even saw attendance at Old Trafford plummet to an average of 15,000 spectators, far short of expectations when the new stadium was built. The First World War forced the FA to suspend national leagues, and the Red Devils played in local competitions. The 1920s and 1930s were also difficult for Manchester United. The club was overshadowed by the success of rivals Manchester City , still managed by Ernest Mangnall , and was relegated to the Second Division in 1922. They struggled to avoid relegation, settling into mid-table. In 1927, a minor crisis erupted, with fans threatening to boycott the club. To address the situation, the possibility of selling the stadium was even considered. Finally, that same year, businessman James William Gibson cleared the £ 2,000 debt and took control of the club. Nevertheless, the sporting miracle did not materialize despite the hiring of a new manager, Scott Duncan, and in 1934, the club came close to being relegated to the Third Division .
Manchester United yo-yoed between divisions, finally returning to the First Division in 1939, just as the war began. During the Second World War , Old Trafford was bombed and left in ruins.
The Busby Years (1945-1969)

In 1945, Scottish manager Matt Busby arrived. He was innovative in his strategy, deciding on the recruitment of new players and directing training sessions, and surrounded himself with an assistant: Jimmy Murphy . Matt Busby's first years were a success; the club finished as runners-up in the league and won the FA Cup in 1948, thanks to local players: Stan Pearson , Jack Rowley , Charlie Mitten , and Allenby Chilton .

Charlie Mitten left for Colombia , but his former teammates won the league title in 1952. However , Matt Busby understood that the team needed more experience and opted for youth. [ Contradictory passage ] This policy took time to produce positive results, but Manchester United won the league title again in 1956 with a team whose average age was 22, scoring 103 goals (a club record). The players of this golden generation, symbolized by Duncan Edwards who made his debut at just 16, would be nicknamed the Busby Babes . In the 1956-57 season, the club won the league title again but lost in the FA Cup final to Aston Villa . Manchester United also became the first English club to participate in the European Cup (against the wishes of the English Football Association ) and lost to Real Madrid in the semi-finals. Previously, the Red Devils achieved their biggest European score by beating Belgian champions RSC Anderlecht 10-0 at Maine Road .
The following year, the club experienced the greatest tragedy in its history.Eight players and three staff members were killed in the Munich air disaster : Geoff Bent , Roger Byrne , Eddie Colman , Mark Jones , David Pegg , Tommy Taylor , Liam Whelan , Walter Crickmer ( club secretary), Bert Whalley (assistant manager), Tom Curry (assistant manager), and Duncan Edwards , who survived the crash but died two weeks later in hospital. Fifteen others were injured, including manager Matt Busby , who spent two months in hospital, and Johnny Berry, who retired from playing due to his injuries. During the crash, goalkeeper Harry Gregg rescued two female passengers and his teammates Bobby Charlton and Dennis Viollet from the burning aircraft. Manchester United, decimated by the Munich disaster, then suffered a string of poor results in the league and lost the FA Cup final to Bolton Wanderers .

Matt Busby rebuilt his team during the 1960s , recruiting new players like Denis Law and Pat Crerand , and placing his trust in young talents, the most famous of whom was George Best . He won the FA Cup in 1963 but finished nineteenth in the league. However, by 1964, the club had climbed back to the top of the table, reaching second place. That same year, Manchester United suffered a crushing defeat in the Cup Winners' Cup : after a comfortable 4-1 victory over Sporting Lisbon at Old Trafford , the Red Devils suffered their worst ever European defeat, losing 5-0 in the return leg. The club went on to win the English league title in 1965 and 1967 .

The following season, in the 1967-68 European Cup , Manchester United faced Real Madrid , six-time winners of the competition, in the semi-finals. After a successful first leg where they secured a 1-0 victory at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium thanks to a goal from George Best , the Red Devils found themselves on the brink of elimination in the return leg, trailing 3-1 with twenty minutes remaining. A frantic finish saw David Sadler and Bill Foulkes score within minutes of each other, allowing Matt Busby and his men to snatch a 3-3 draw at Old Trafford and thus qualify for their first ever European final. In that final, Manchester United faced Benfica Lisbon , led by the great Eusébio , already two-time winners of the competition. They triumphed 4-1 after extra time thanks to a superb performance, becoming the first English club to win the competition. This team boasts three Ballon d'Or winners : Bobby Charlton , Denis Law , and George Best . A few weeks later, the Red Devils were defeated in the Intercontinental Cup final by Estudiantes de La Plata : after a 1-0 loss in Argentina , Manchester United drew 1-1 at Old Trafford .
After 24 years as Manchester United manager, Matt Busby retired in 1969 at the end of the season. He won five English league titles , two FA Cups , five Charity Shields and the European Cup with the Red Devils .
Years without a championship (1969-1986)
Wilf McGuinness replaced Matt Busby during the 1969-70 season , which ended with an eighth-place finish in the league. After a poor start to the 1970-71 season, he was dropped from the first team and put in charge of the reserves, while Matt Busby returned on an emergency six-month stint. Results improved, but after his departure in the summer of 1971, the club lost some of its best players, including Nobby Stiles and Pat Crerand .

Frank O'Farrell took over as manager of Manchester United. However, like Wilf McGuinness , he only stayed for 18 months. In 1972, Tommy Docherty (nicknamed "the Doc") became manager and saved the club from relegation that season, but they were relegated in 1974 when Denis Law , who had transferred to Manchester City in the summer of 1973, scored the goal that relegated his former club. With this relegation, George Best and Bobby Charlton also left the club.
The team bounced back immediately and reached the FA Cup final in 1976 (losing to Southampton FC ). The club reached the final again in 1977 , defeating Liverpool FC . Despite this success and his popularity with the fans, Tommy Docherty was dismissed immediately after the final due to an affair with the wife of the club's physiotherapist.

Manchester United's new manager, Dave Sexton , implemented a defensive style of play (unpopular due to the club's history of favoring an attacking approach under Matt Busby and then Tommy Docherty ). The club remained in mid-table, and despite winning their last seven matches, Sexton was sacked in 1981.
Ron Atkinson arrived at the club and immediately broke the British transfer record by signing Bryan Robson , who was considered the best midfielder since Duncan Edwards and who would go on to become the club's greatest captain in history . [ 4 ] His squad also included Jesper Olsen , Paul McGrath , Gordon Strachan , and academy graduates Norman Whiteside and Mark Hughes . In 1984, the club reached the semi-finals of the Cup Winners' Cup , losing to eventual winners Juventus 1-1 on aggregate and 1-2 on aggregate. Manchester United went on to win the FA Cup in 1985 , having lost in the final in 1983 , and became favorites to win the 1986 league title after winning their first ten matches, but ultimately finished fourth. Following a poor start to the following year, Ron Atkinson was sacked before the end of the season.Wikipedia App Icon
